History of Kolkata

History of Kolkata dates back from 1609 when Job Charnock of East India Company selected Kolkata as the center for trade and commerce. Sutanuti , Gobindapur and Kalikata are the three villages that were purchased by East India Company of the British.

Kolkata was conquered by Siraj-ud -dullah in 1756. Kolkata was given the name Alinagar by Shira -ul -dullah.
The British recaptured Kolkata in 1757 and established the factory for preparing currency in 1757. Clive controlled Kolkata from 1765.
Kolkata was struck by the devastating famine in 1770. Kolkata, erstwhile Calcutta ,became the capital of West Bengal in 1775.
Calcutta Gazette , a newspaper was published in 1784. Asiatic Society was founded by Sir Wiliam Jones in 1784.

Fort William College was founded in 1801. Town Hall was constructed in 1813. The monument in Kolkata was constructed in 1828. The railways started plying from Calcutta to Hooghly in 1854. Calcutta University was established in 1857. The tram started operating from 1873.

The museum was founded in 1875. The conference for Indian National Congress was conducted in Kolkata in 1886.

The ploy by Lord Curzon to divide Bengal was foiled in 1905 due to the vehement protests by the residents of Bengal. The people of Kolkata displayed the unique feeling of solidarity and oneness by protesting against the shrewd diplomat policies of the British.

The British shifted their capital from Kolkata to Delhi in 1911.Victoria Memorial,a marvel of architecture, was constructed in Kolkata in 1921.Chittaranjan Das was selected as the Mayor of Kolkata in 1924. Mother Teresa came to Kolkata in 1929.
Kolkata was struck by a famine in 1943.
Kolkata became the capital of West Bengal post independence in 1947. Dr. Prafulla Chandra Ghosh was elected as the first chief minister of West Bengal. A lot of homeless people from East Pakistan flocked to the city of Kolkata.

The broadcasting of programs by television started in 1975. The underground railway started plying in Kolkata.

Satayajit, a renowned filmmaker throughout the world was awarded Oscar for his monumental contribution towards films.
Kolkata is the hotbed of cultural activities. A lot of eminent personalities like Satyajit Ray, Rabindranath Tagore,Amartya Sen, Mother Tagore chose Kolkata as their working place.

Mother Teresa,who stayed in Kolkata to pursue her philanthropic mission expired in Kolkata in 1997. The name of Calcutta changed to Kolkata in 2001.
